What the inspector wrote

Licensing Program Analyst (LPA) Christi Coppo arrived unannounced to conduct a Case Management and was greeted by Administrator Mercedea Vegvary. Administrator Mercedes Vegvary recently purchased new training materials to conduct dementia training for facility staff. LPA reviewed training materials. LPA reviewed book “The Practical Dementia Caregiver Guide,” by Sam Toroghi, MD published 2024. LPA observed book to cover subjects that meet 87705(b)(1)(B) and (C). LPA reviewed book “The Dementia Caregiver’s Survival Guide,” by Janet G. Cruz published 2023. LPA observed book to cover subjects that meet 87705(b)(1)(B) and (C) as well as HSC 1569.625(c)(8). Additionally, Admin advised LPA that she will be getting a supplemental book “A Caregiver’s Guide to diet and nutrition for dementia, by Sam Toroghi MD, published 2024 that addresses 87705(b)(1)(A). LPA reviewed supplemental book table of contents and it appears to address 87705(b)(1)A). Per regulation 87705(b): (b) Licensees shall be responsible for the following:(1)Ensuring staff receive the following training as part of the training requirements specified in Section 87208 Plan of Operation: (A) Dementia care, including, but not limited to, knowledge about hydration, nutrition, skin care, communication, therapeutic activities, behavioral challenges, the environment, and assisting with activities of daily living; (B) Recognizing symptoms that may create or aggravate behavioral expression, as defined in Section 87101, Definitions, including, but not limited to, dehydration, urinary tract infections, and problems with swallowing; and (C) Recognizing the effects of medications commonly used to reduce behavioral expression. Additionally, per Health and Safety Code (HSC) 1569.625: (c) The training shall include, but not be limited to, all of the following: (7) Dementia care, including the use and misuse of antipsychotics, the interaction of Continued on 809.... Continued from 809... drugs commonly used by the elderly, and the adverse effects of psychotropic drugs for use in controlling the behavior of persons with dementia. (8) The special needs of persons with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, including nonpharmacologic, person-centered approaches to dementia care. Materials reviewed today with LPA appear to meet 87705(b) and HSC1569.625(c)(8). Materials appear to be comprehensive in covering topics listed in regulations 87705(b) and HSC1569.625(c)(8). Once supplement nutrition book and materials addressing HSC1569.625(c)(7) are obtained Admin will forward to LPA for review. Additionally, all books are available in Spanish and as audio books, both in English and Spanish. No deficiencies cited. Exit interview conducted with Administrator and a copy of this report was given
