What providers tell us about this citation

Based on community experience, not official guidance.

29 California RCFEs were cited for first aid kit violations. LPAs check the kit's location and contents during the initial walk-through. An expired bandage or a single missing item is an instant Type B citation. Assign someone to inspect the kit every month and log the check. A five-minute monthly review prevents a citation.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Answers based on public CCLD data and regulation text. May not reflect recent changes.

What is the first aid kit requirement for California assisted living facilities?
Title 22, Section 87465(a)(8) requires every RCFE without a medical unit on the grounds to maintain a complete first aid kit in a specific, readily accessible location. The kit must be a general type approved by the American Red Cross or contain at minimum the items listed in the regulation. LPAs check the kit's contents and location during every inspection walk-through.
How common are first aid kit violations in California assisted living?
According to CCLD inspection records, 29 California RCFEs were cited for first aid kit deficiencies across 9 counties. All 29 citations were classified as Type B, reflecting potential rather than immediate risk to residents. Contra Costa County had the highest count with 6 citations. This violation affects approximately 0.22% of licensed facilities statewide.
What happens if an RCFE is cited for a first aid kit violation?
CCLD issues a Type B citation when a facility's first aid kit is missing, incomplete, or stored outside the designated location. You must correct the deficiency and submit a plan of correction. LPAs may verify compliance during a follow-up visit. While Type B citations carry lower penalties than Type A, they still appear on your public inspection record for families and referral agencies to review.
How do I fix or prevent a first aid kit violation?
Choose a single, fixed location for the kit and make sure all staff know where it is. Restock the kit monthly using the American Red Cross approved list or the items specified in Title 22. Assign one staff member to check contents on a set schedule and document each check. LPAs often open the kit during their first walk-through, so it should be complete and current at all times.
Does a first aid kit violation affect my RCFE license?
A single Type B citation for an incomplete first aid kit will not suspend your license on its own. However, CCLD tracks all deficiencies and repeated safety-related citations can trigger increased inspection frequency or license conditions. Keeping a fully stocked, accessible first aid kit is one of the simplest ways to maintain a clean record and protect your residents.
