FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Answers based on public CCLD data and regulation text. May not reflect recent changes.

What is a hygiene facility maintenance violation?
Title 22, Section 87303(e)(6) requires RCFEs to keep all toilet, handwashing, and bathing facilities in proper operating condition. This rule also mandates specific equipment for residents with physical limitations. Broken showers or toilets compromise resident hygiene and dignity.
How common is this violation in California assisted living?
Public CCLD inspection records show 77 California RCFEs received citations for failing to maintain their hygiene facilities. The state classifies this as a Type B violation, which indicates a potential risk to residents. Los Angeles County facilities received 35 of these citations alone.
What happens if an RCFE is cited for broken hygiene facilities?
The facility will receive a Type B citation and must fix the broken equipment within a specified timeframe. The administrator must submit a plan of correction to the CCLD. If the broken facilities create an immediate hazard, the citation severity could increase.
How do I fix or prevent hygiene facility maintenance violations?
Implement a weekly checklist to test all toilets, sinks, and showers in your facility. Fix any reported leaks or broken fixtures within 24 hours to show good faith compliance. Ensure you have handicap-accessible equipment available for nonambulatory residents as needed.
Does failing to maintain bathrooms affect my RCFE license?
Yes, unaddressed maintenance issues are flagged during annual inspections and can trigger unannounced follow-up visits. The CCLD views physical plant maintenance as a direct reflection of facility operations. Chronic maintenance failures can result in conditions placed on your license.
