What providers tell us about this citation

Based on community experience, not official guidance.

34 California RCFEs were cited for missing reappraisal meetings. LPAs check each resident file for a documented meeting date within the past 12 months. Set calendar alerts 30 days before each deadline so your team has time to schedule and document the meeting before an inspector finds the gap.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Answers based on public CCLD data and regulation text. May not reflect recent changes.

What is a reappraisal meeting violation in California assisted living?
A reappraisal meeting violation occurs when an RCFE fails to hold a required meeting to discuss a resident's updated care assessment. Title 22, Section 87463(i) requires this meeting when a resident experiences a significant change in condition, or at least once every 12 months. The meeting must include the resident, their representative if applicable, and appropriate facility staff. Without it, care plans may not reflect the resident's current needs.
How common are reappraisal meeting citations in California assisted living?
According to CCLD inspection records, 34 California RCFEs received citations for failing to hold required reappraisal meetings, with 37 total citations issued across 17 counties. These are classified as Type B deficiencies, indicating a potential risk if not corrected. Ventura County led with 7 citations, followed by Alameda with 5. Inspectors commonly find this violation when reviewing resident files and discovering expired or missing meeting documentation.
What happens if an RCFE is cited for missing a reappraisal meeting?
CCLD issues a Type B citation when a facility fails to hold a required reappraisal meeting. The facility must schedule the meeting promptly and submit a plan of correction. Type B citations carry civil penalties, though lower than Type A violations. The deficiency becomes part of the facility's public inspection record. If multiple residents have missing reappraisals, each can generate a separate citation, compounding the compliance problem for the operator.
How do I fix or prevent a reappraisal meeting violation?
Set up a tracking system that flags every resident's annual reappraisal deadline and any reported change in condition. Schedule meetings proactively rather than waiting for an LPA to find the gap. Use a simple checklist to confirm that the resident, their representative, and appropriate staff are all invited and that the meeting is documented in the file. Ventura County LPAs cited 7 facilities for this, often due to poor deadline tracking.
Does a reappraisal meeting citation affect my RCFE license?
A single Type B citation for a missed reappraisal meeting will not suspend your license, but it becomes part of your CCLD compliance record. A pattern of missed meetings across multiple residents signals a systemic documentation problem. CCLD may increase inspection frequency or require additional corrective action. Consistent compliance with reappraisal deadlines demonstrates to inspectors and families that your community keeps care plans current and resident-centered.
