Inspector’s narrative

What the inspector wrote

On 5/17/24 Licensing Program Analyst's (LPA's) B. Govindasamy and D. Campos conducted an unannounced Case Management inspection at Drena Brown family childcare home. LPA met with Licensee, Drena. Present in the home were licensee's adult daughter and minor son who assist with day care, 4 day care children consisting of one infant and 3 preschoolers. Initiated by the licensee, the purpose of today's inspection is to conduct a health and safety tour of the home's basement level to add it to the on-limit areas of the day care home. Licensee wants to add the basement level bedroom and attached bathroom to the day care. A fire clearance was granted by the Oakland Fire Department on 5/9/2024 and received by the Oakland Regional Office on 5/9/2024 and indicates no children are allowed on the second floor AKA Master bedroom. Per verbal clarification from the fire inspector M. Yamaguchi the bathroom and room to the right of bathroom (nursery room) on the second floor may be used. LPA's inspected the areas requested and the following corrections must be completed before approval is granted for day care use. Licensee was reminded, even though infants do not use the cribs on the second floor nursery room, all dangerous items in the room should remain inaccessible: Room must be clear of any hazardous items such as dangling or loose cables, remove broken or soiled furniture, infant devices that are not in good repair. Crib mattresses shall be firm and covered with a fitted sheet that is appropriate to the mattress size to prevent dislodging. garbage must be safely disposed of and kept out of reach of children. Stairs leading to basement must be gated to prevent access by children under 5 years old at the top and bottom of stairs. Repair gap at the top of stairs leading to basement to prevent a tripping hazard to children in care. Remove hazardous items under bathroom sink or attach a child proof lock or latch to keep inaccessible to children in care. Toilet and floor in basement bathroom must be clean, and bath mat should be secured or removed to avoid a slipping hazard to day care children. Attach child proof latch or child proof door knob cover on basement storage closet to avoid access by day care children. Licensee must provide proof of corrections via pictures submitted via email to LPA within 30 days form the date of this report. If more time is required Licensee will request additional time via email and indicate why not able to complete corrections within original time frame. LPA's reviewed and discussed the new Safe Sleep Regulations for all infants (0-2 year old), with licensee and assistant adult daughter. Effective today, day care will implement following changes at this address: On Limits: Living room, dining area, kitchen, bathroom on second level. Off Limits: Basement and bathroom in basement, bedroom behind kitchen, laundry room, Master Bedroom and nursery room on second level. OUTDOOR YARDS : On Limits : Front Yard, drive way to access back yard, back yard. Off Limits: outdoor patio deck, and storage shed. No deficiencies were cited during today's inspection. Exit interview conducted and report reviewed with Licensee, Drena Brown. Notice of Site Visit provided must remain posted for 30 days.
