Inspector’s narrative

What the inspector wrote

Licensing Program Manager (LPM) Sherelle Johnson and Licensing Program Analyst's (LPA's) Kareeca Sykes and D. Campos conducted an unannounced Case Management-licensee initiated inspection at Drena Brown family childcare home. LPM and LPA's met with Licensee's adult son Jaylen McKay and adult daughter Hazina Mckay. Present in the home were (licensee's two adult children, and her minor son who assist with day care, and (6) day care children consisting of (one infant and 5 preschoolers). Initiated by the licensee, the purpose of today's inspection is to conduct a health and safety tour of the home's basement level to add it to the on-limit areas of the day care home. Licensee wants to add the basement level bedroom with attached bathroom to the day care as well as the upper level bedroom (nursery room) to the right of the bathroom. A fire clearance was granted by the Oakland Fire Department on 5/9/2024 and received by the Oakland Regional Office on 5/9/2024 and indicates no children are allowed on the second floor AKA Master bedroom. Per verbal clarification from the fire inspector M. Yamaguchi the master bedroom which is on the main level to be kept off limits to day care children and the bathroom and room to the right of bathroom (nursery room) on the second level may be used for day care children. During a previous inspection, the following corrections were required before granting approval of the above mentioned areas for day care use. Remove hazardous items from upper level bedroom (nursery room) such as dangling or loose cables, broken or soiled furniture, infant devices in disrepair. Crib mattresses shall be firm and covered with a fitted sheet that is appropriate to the mattress size to prevent dislodging. garbage must be safely disposed of and kept out of reach of children. Stairs leading to basement must be gated at the top and bottom of stairs to prevent access by day care children under 5 years old. Repair gap at the top of stairs leading to basement to prevent a tripping hazard to children in care. Remove hazardous items under bathroom sink or attach a child proof lock or latch to keep inaccessible to children in care. Toilet and floor in basement bathroom must be clean, and bath mat should be secured or removed to avoid a slipping hazard to day care children. Attach child proof latch or child proof door knob cover on basement storage closet to avoid access by day care children. Licensee submitted pictures of corrections via email to LPA. Today, LPM and LPA's inspected the areas requested and confirmed all corrections have been completed. Effective today, day care will implement the following changes at this address: ON-LIMITS: Main Level : living room, dining area, and kitchen, Upper Level : bathroom and bedroom to the right of bathroom (nursery room), Lower Level : Basement and bathroom in basement, Outdoor: front yard, drive way to access back yard. OFF-LIMITS: Main Level : master bedroom, master bathroom, and laundry room behind kitchen, Second Level: bedroom to the left of bathroom Outdoor : patio deck and storage shed. Off limit areas will be kept inaccessible to children in care by closed and or locked doors, child proof gates, latches and visual supervision at all times. No deficiencies were cited during today's inspection. Exit interview conducted and report reviewed with assistant's Jaylen McKay and Hazina McKay.
