What the inspector wrote

Licensing Program Analyst (LPA) Paul Petersen conducted an annual random site inspection for this facility at 9:00AM. LPA met with director/licensee, Wednesday Chavis. This program is the preschool component of a combination center with a school age program also operating at this facility. Present at the preschool at the time of LPA's arrival were three teaching staff, consisting of one qualified teacher and two aids, and six preschool age children. One additional preschool age child arrived while LPA was still present. The facility is within ratio and capacity and children are being directly supervised. All adults present at this program are background cleared and associated. LPAs toured all areas licensed for use by this preschool program. The preschool program operates out of rooms 4, 5, 5a, and 12. Room 12 is shared with the school age program on an alternating schedule to ensure preschool and school age children do not commingle. Classrooms have age-appropriate furnishings, equipment and play items which are free of broken or sharp pieces. There is a centralized smoke/fire alarm system and per director, the facility was most recently inspected by the fire department in 2020. There is a carbon monoxide detector which is functioning and multiple fully charged fire extinguishers. Counters and surfaces, including floors, are free of toxins and observed hazardous conditions. Hazardous items/Cleaning supplies are stored inaccessible to children. Bathrooms are age appropriate and toilets and faucets are in working condition. There are working water fountains indoors along with individual water bottles. Outdoor drinking water is available by water bottles. Breakfast, lunch and snack are catered by West Contra Costa Unified School District. There is a menu posted. There is napping equipment available for children and children's napping linens/bedding are stored separate for individual child use and laundered at least weekly. There is one small slide present and no other pieces of high climbing equipment or swings. Play equipment and furnishings are free of sharp/hazardous pieces. There is cushioning under/around the slide. There are no pools, ponds or other bodies of water accessible to children. Children's files were reviewed for medical assessment forms, parents' rights forms and identification and emergency information forms. Staff records were reviewed for teacher qualifications, health screening reports, mandatory reporter training certificates and immunization records. Teacher qualification form was completed for one staff during this inspection. At least one staff present has current CPR/First Aid certification. All required postings are present.
