What the inspector wrote

A prelicensing visit was conducted on this date by LPA Brannon. I met with District Service Specialist, Salvador Fonseca. The applicant is Washington Unified School District. The center is located at American Union Elementary School. The applicant is changing classroom from 13 to classroom 20. Capacity will remain 24 preschool children. Hours of operation is Monday through Friday. Day care children are present from 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM. Staff are on campus from 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM. This program will operate during the traditional school year. Breakfast and lunch are provided to children in care. Meals are served in the cafeteria. Ill children and staff will utilize the bathroom located in the nurse\342\200\231s office. Ill children will be isolated in the nurse\342\200\231s office. Room measurements taken and reviewed with Salvador Fonseca. The total Preschool Age square footage is 984, which will accommodate 24 preschool children. Adequate storage space available for children's belongings. Outdoor storage is not available for toys and equipment. Toys and equipment age appropriate. Outdoor measurements taken during previous pre-licensing visit on 12/5/17, 12194 square feet which will accommodate 24 preschool children. Mature trees provide adequate shade in the outdoor activity area. The applicant is using wood chip for cushioning under the outdoor climbing structure. There is 1 toilet and 1 sink/hand washing fixture in the children's bathroom. This facility has two waivers: one for the sharing the outside play area and one for sharing the elementary children's restroom. Licensee is utilizing a water dispenser to provide inside drinking water. There is not a outside drinking water fountain. An Igloo will be utilized for outdoor drinking water. Licensee will ensure that a cup dispenser and disposable cups will be used to provide uncontaminated inside and outside drinking water. The reading area is blocked off by shelving units and can interfere with visual supervision. Per District Service Specialist, staff will be stationed near the reading area to provide the required visual supervision. LPA observed a working carbon monoxide and smoke detector in the classroom. CONTINUED ON FOLLOWING PAGE The following items must be completed/corrected prior to issuing a license. Licensee will send photographs of correction. 1. The fire clearance was received for the elementary school. A fire clearance for the preschool classroom 20. 2. Install a gate to keep children out of the storage area that was once staff office. 3. The shelving units are to be anchored to prevent them from tipping over. 4. Either a lock or gate to be installed to prevent children from opening a storage cabinet next to the inside handwashing fixture. 5. Remove the dark taupe metal fixtures that were used for elementary school age children. These fixtures are the same height as children. 6. Relocate the First Aide to an area that is inaccessible to children. 7. There is a rusty protruding bolt that was used to hold a steering wheel on the climbing structure. The steering wheel has been removed. Pending a final file review and completion of above items, a recommendation will be made to approve the change in classrooms.
