What the inspector wrote

Licensing Program Analyst (LPA) Maddox met with Applicant/Director Shanna Johnson for the purpose of conducting a Pre-Licensing inspection for a Preschool component with a Toddler Option. Director has also submitted an application for a School age component (X 147750004 ). This center is located on the grounds of Grace Lutheran Church (this site was formerly licensed as Grace Lutheran PS). A tour of the facility was conducted inside and outside. The tour included Office space, Kitchen, bathrooms, classrooms, an the outside play yard. Days/hours of operation will be Monday through Friday from 7:45am to 5:15 pm. INDOOR ACTIVITY SPACE : There are a variety of age-appropriate equipment, toys and materials in good condition and in sufficient quantity to allow children present to fully participate in planned activities. Telephone service, heating, lighting and ventilation were evaluated. LPAs observed individual storage areas for children\342\200\231s belongings (in the reception area), bedding will be is stored in the storage room located in the hallway by the office (key lock). Center has drinking fountains in the classroom, children will also bring their own water bottles. Tables and chairs are provided to meet the needs of the children. The child care center was toured and found to be clean, safe, sanitary and in good repair to ensure the safety and well-being of children, employees and visitors. Indoor activity space for Toddlers and School age children are physically separate from space used by Preschool classroom. Disinfectants, cleaning solutions, all potential hazardous that could pose a danger if readily available to children were stored and inaccessible to children (Storage room and on a high shelf). The isolation area (located in the office area) is equipped to isolate and care for any child who becomes ill during the day. HEALTH RELATED SERVICES: Director states this center will not dispense medications. LPA observed fully equipped first aid kits (front office area and in the classroom), working Carbon Monoxide and , Smoke detectors, Fire Extinguisher (2A10BC) were fully charged. Pesticides and other similar toxic substances were not stored in food storerooms, kitchen areas, food preparation areas, or areas where kitchen equipment or utensils are stored. Soaps, detergents, cleaning compounds or similar substances were stored in areas separate from food supplies. Incidental Medical Services was discussed. Bathroom There is 1 bathroom designated for PS children, this bathroom has 3 toilets and 3 sinks, also, LPA observed changing table within arms reach. LPA ensured the toilets flushed properly and are reachable for children. The restroom has adequate toilet paper and paper towels available, bathroom was clean and sanitary during this inspection. Center has a separate staff bathroom located in the main classroom, the bathroom is kept locked and will also be used as an isolation bathroom. Sign-in and Out Procedure: Center will utilize an electronic sign in and out procedure (Brightwheel), center has the capability of producing hard copies if needed. Napping Center will utilize cots for children to nap on. Cots were stocked and stored in the Storage closet. Director/Owner shall ensure Napping equipment will be arranged so that each child has access to a walkway without having to walk on or over the cots or mats of other children. Bedding shall be individually stored so that each child's bedding is identifiable and no child's used bedding comes into contact with other bedding. Outdoor The entire yard is fenced (there is a fence on the far end of the play yard that is 3 inches short of 48 inches) ; there is sand underneath climbing equipment on the play yard; There are 2 separate climbing apparatus' on the play yard, after inspecting the equipment, LPA did not see any specifications that state the appropriate ages that are allowed . there is a drinking fountain available on the yard, LPA highly discourages the usage of water fountains due to the COVID-19 pandemic and flu season approaching . There is natural shade provided by trees on the yard. Meals : At this time, Center children will bring their own meals (breakfast, snack, lunch). MEASUREMENTS Main classroom designated for Toddlers: 12 X 14 = 168/35 = 5 (indoor play area) 32 X 30 = 960/35 = 27 Total Indoor space: 32 Cub Room 14 X 18.5 = 259/35 = 7 Wild Flower Room 18 X 14 = 252/35 = 7 OUTSIDE PLAY YARD 200 X 160 = 32,000/75 = 426 BATHROOM The Bathroom for PS/Toddlers has 3 toilets and 3 sinks Total capacity of 45 With measurements provided, and approved fire clearance, center will be licensed for a capacity of 45 (lowest of the above measurements). The Following were discussed: Wooden walking beam and small wooden table/bench combo has peeling and chipping paint The fence on the far side of the yard is 3 inches short of 48 inches which is required The chain link fencing by the sand area should be covered with some type of material in an effort to provide a safe environment for children, the fencing separates the play yard from a mobile home park LPA not able to determine the appropriate ages allowed on the 2 pieces of climbing apparatus' on the play yard, however, it's obviously not suitable for Toddlers. Exit interview was conducted. This report was read and a copy provided to Shanna Johnson.
