What the inspector wrote

On 9/30/2022 Licensing Program Analyst (LPA) Jillinda Chandler made an announced visit to School Days Montessori School LLC for the purpose of conducting a pre-licensing inspection. LPA met with Kaitlyn Tedesco (applicant) and Margaret Tedesco (administrator) who provided a tour of the facility. The applicant is requesting a preschool license with a toddler option. The applicant is requesting a capacity of 20 preschoolers, ages 3 years \342\200\223 until entry into first grade; and 10 toddlers, ages 18 \342\200\223 36 months. There are 2 classrooms dedicated to day care activity; room 2 (the larger room) will be used for preschool activities and room 1 will be used for toddler activity. The school is located on the premises of Temple Beth El. Classroom are used by the temple on Sundays per leasing agreement. The schools operating hour are Monday - Thursday / 7:30 a.m - 6:00 p.m. and Friday 7:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. (closed for Shabbat) school also is closed for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippaur. There is an approved fire clearance on file conducted by Henry Medina of the L.A City fire department. pg.1 of 7 THE FOLLOWING WAS OBSERVED DURING THE INSPECTION INDOOR ACTIVITY SPACE Fire extinguishers were 2AB10C or larger were observed in each classroom. Carbon monoxide and fire detectors were observed as being hard wired into the fire alarm system. First aid kits were available with the required essentials: scissors, bandages, ointments tweezers, thermometer and first aid manual Age appropriate equipment was observed in good repair Drinking water will be provided through filtered water dispensers The facility has central heating and cooling. Windows were in good repair free of chipping paint, dirt, insects or debris Adequate lighting was observed The classrooms were clean in good repair Trash cans used for solid waste were observed with tight fitting lids pg. 2 of 7 No Fireplaces or open face heaters were observed Disinfectants and cleaning solution and other toxins or poisons were made inaccessible to children, placed in locked cabinet or storage room The office and the staff restroom will be used for isolation of ill children, the office shall be equipped with a cot or mat for resting. The facility was equipped with a working telephones in each classroom and the office. Parents and authorized adults will sign children in and out using their original signatures and provide date and times. Applicant was made aware that sign in sheets shall be maintained for a minimum of one month and readily available for review by the department. The required postings were observed, applicant shall move posting to common area for parents and visitors review Measurements for the indoor activity space was 981.94 divided by 35 SQ. FT. per child = for a total of 28 children (18 preschoolers and 9 toddlers). LPA discussed adequate ratios with the applicant 1:12 preschoolers and 1:6 toddlers. pg. 3 of 7 FOOD SERVICE: Meals will be provided by the parents and snacks will be provided by the school. Weekly menus were posted for review. Children will eat in their classrooms. LPA did not observe a kitchen, food preparation will be minimal (slicing fruits) other foods will be individually packaged. LPA did observed refrigeration, per applicant prepping will be done in room 1 were there is counter space and running water. Center shall has devised an Incidental Medical Service plan and provide to parents of children with allergies (epi-pen), asthmatic (inhalers), and children needing G-tube feeding RESTROOMS THERE WERE: 2 toilets = 1 toilet per 15 children for a total of 30 children 5 sinks = 1 sink per 15 children for a total of 75 children Toilets were age appropriate, sinks were not age appropriate, LPA observed broad based stools to make sink accessible to children in care The restrooms were clean and sanitized with the necessary toiletries, sinks and toilets were operable and in good repair. Faucets delivered cold water. pg. 4 of 7 OUTDOOR ACTIVITY SPACE Age appropriate toys and equipment were observed in good condition. Toys and equipment will not be stationary. The play yard gated with a 4 feet or higher gate. Applicant shall make exit ways inaccessible to children Applicant shall make the tree planter area inaccessible to children in care LPA did not observe any climbing apparatus during the inspection. Artificial grass was observed for cushioning Water pitchers and disposable cups were available for an outdoor water source LPA observed shade umbrellas for shade and benches for resting. LPA discussed AB 2370 Lead Testing Bill. Building was built in 2015. Applicant shall provide parents with lead poisoning pamphlet Measurements for the outdoor activity area were 1485.54 divided by 75 sq. ft. per child for capacity total of 19 children. Applicant is requesting a waiver for square footage and shared outdoor activity space. pg. 5 of 7 Based on today\342\200\231s inspection the facility shall be recommended for licensing with a capacity of 9 toddlers and 18 preschool children for a total of 27 determined by the indoor capacity space of the individual classrooms, and pending approval of the requested waiver and the following recommended corrections. applicant shall move posting to common area for parents and visitors review The play yard gated with a 4 inch or higher gate. Applicant was reminded that all adults 18 and over, including employees and volunteers, must obtain a criminal record clearance or exemption, or transfer their existing clearance or exemption, prior to initial presence in a Child Care Center. A civil penalty of $100.00 minimum/day up to $500.00 maximum per day/per person will be assessed if this regulation is violated. pg. 6 of 7 LPA discussed the safe sleep regulations with applicant and discussed the Child Care Licensing Safe Sleep webpage at https://www.cdss.ca.gov/inforesources/child-care-licensing/public-information-and-resources/safe-sleep as an additional resource. LPA also informed licensee [facility representative] of the importance of checking for recalled infant devices on the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) website at https://www.cpsc.gov/ and recommended they register all infant devices with the CPSC to be notified of any recalls on their purchased equipment.
