Inspector’s narrative

What the inspector wrote

Regarding the allegation staff gave infants large pieces of fruit causing infants to choke, interviews revealed the food that is served is prepared in the kitchen by the Director and/or Assistant Director, and then taken on carts ready to be served by classroom staff. Some interviews revealed there have been no issues with children eating or swallowing any of the food that the CCC provides. Other interviews revealed on one occasion, a fruit cocktail that came in a white container contained larger pieces of fruit was served to children and one or two children had a hard time breaking up the fruit and eating it. None of these interviews revealed any children choked on the fruit. One interview revealed that the fruit was taken away from the children to prevent any choking when it was realized the fruit were difficult to eat. Additionally, while LPA toured the facility, LPA observed fruit that had been served and observed peaches to be diced in smaller sizes. LPA also observed diced frozen and canned fruit in the kitchen. Regarding the allegation that the food storage container was not kept clean, all interviews revealed that food storage containers are kept clean and there have been no issues with cleanliness of containers. It was revealed that the food is usually provided to staff in a bowl with foil on top or in plastic storage bags. Additionally, LPA toured the kitchen and observed the kitchen and there were no issues with cleanliness. Based on confidential interviews conducted during the investigation, the allegation that staff gave infants large pieces of fruit causing infants to choke and food storage container was not kept clean may have occurred, however is not supported or proven by evidence. Therefore, the above allegations are unsubstantiated. An exit interview was conducted and a copy of this report and appeal rights were discussed and provided to Director Tara Martinez. A notice of site visit was also provided and must remain posted for 30 days.
