FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Answers based on public CCLD data and regulation text. May not reflect recent changes.

What is the admission care meeting requirement for California RCFEs?
Title 22, Section 87467(a) requires your assisted living facility to hold a care planning meeting with the resident, their representative, and appropriate staff within two weeks of admission. The meeting produces a written record of the care the resident will receive and their service preferences. This ensures everyone involved agrees on the care plan from the very start of the resident's stay.
How common are admission care meeting violations in California assisted living?
According to California CCLD inspection records, 25 RCFEs were cited for this deficiency. These are classified as Type B violations, meaning the noncompliance poses a potential risk rather than immediate harm. San Diego and Riverside counties had the highest number of citations. LPAs routinely review admission files during inspections, making this a commonly flagged documentation issue across California.
What happens if an RCFE is cited for missing the admission care meeting?
Your community must submit a plan of correction to CCLD showing you have held the required meeting and updated the resident's file. Type B citations carry civil penalties, though lower than Type A violations. CCLD may schedule a follow-up visit to confirm the deficiency is corrected. If the missing meeting reflects a systemic pattern, the agency could increase inspection frequency for your facility.
How do I fix or prevent an admission care meeting violation?
Create a standard admission checklist that triggers the care meeting within the first ten days of move-in. Assign a specific staff member to coordinate scheduling with the resident, their representative, and any home health agency involved. Use a template for the written care record so no required elements are missed. File the completed and signed document in the resident's record before the two-week deadline passes.
Does a missing admission care meeting affect my RCFE license?
One Type B citation for this issue will not put your license in immediate jeopardy. CCLD does review compliance trends over time, and repeated documentation failures can lead to more frequent inspections or a conditional license. If a resident experiences harm and no initial care meeting was held, the facility faces greater liability and the deficiency could be treated more seriously during enforcement review.
