What the inspector wrote

On 08/09/2024 at 11:28am, Licensing Program Analysts (LPAs), Farida Raja and Jennifer "Jen" Beehler conducted an unannounced case management inspection. Purpose of today's inspection: Facility has requested additional classroom space to the existing license. The existing capacity of 84 children remains unchanged. LPA met with Director, Jamie Newton and explained the nature of today's inspection. Facility is already operational in the Westminster Wing which includes Classrooms 16, 20, 21A, 21B, 22 and one outdoor playground. Facility is requesting to add Classrooms 2, 3 and 4 in the Preschool Wing and the adjoining playground to the existing license. Director stated that young preschoolers will use the additional classroom space requested. The 3-5 year olds will continue to use the currently licensed rooms. Director stated that the school resumes operations on 08/12/2024. LPAs observed an open house conducted by the facility during today's inspection. A fire inspection for the additional classroom space was approved by the San Jose Fire Department on 07/22/2024. LPAs toured the indoor and outdoor areas of the facility during today's inspection and measured all indoor classrooms and two outdoor playgrounds as facility was previously measured on 08/29/1997. The indoor measurements contain a total of {4150.428} square feet. Total indoor space from both wings will accommodate facility’s request for 84 preschool children. The outdoor measurements contain a total of {18538.9964} square feet. Total outdoor space for both playgrounds will accommodate facility’s request for 84 children. Indoor and outdoor space utilized by children was inspected today. Facility has 3 bathrooms with a total of 6 toilets and 3 urinals (135) and 10 sinks (150). The classrooms are observed to be clean, safe, sanitary and in good repair. All rooms have age-appropriate materials, toys, and equipment for children. Furniture and equipment were observed to be maintained in good condition, free of sharp, loose or pointed parts. Continued on Page 2 There are 35 nap mats, 72 chairs, 118 cubbies, 32 hooks, and 21 tables available for preschool children. Director stated that some children are part of the half day program and do not nap at the facility. LPAs observed that all furniture and equipment is in good condition and safe for the children. Facility has solid waste containers with tight fitting covers in each room. There are two separate staff bathrooms that could be used by sick child if necessary. A sick child will be isolated in the Director's office and isolation equipment will be provided. Facility has adequate ventilation, including central air conditioning/heating. Carbon monoxide detectors are operable. LPAs observed 2A10BC fire extinguishers throughout the facility. LPAs toured the outdoor areas. Outdoor playground and play equipment were inspected and observed to be fenced in and free of hazards. LPAs observed play equipment was in good condition, age-appropriate, and has sufficient tan bark as resilient material under high climbing structures to absorb falls. Shaded rest area is provided by building overhang, trees and canopy. There were no bodies of water observed. LPAs observed a covered sand box. Drinking water is readily available for children via water bottles from home are are refilled using filtered water from the kitchen. LPAs observed drinking water fountains in the indoor and outdoor areas. Director provided a copy of the of the lead testing report conducted on 09/24/2022 to LPAs during today's visit. Director also submitted an original Application for a Child Care Center License (LIC 200A) and Facility Sketch (LIC 999) during today's inspection. As a result of today’s inspection, no deficiencies were cited. LPAs advised Director that a license for 84 children will be issued following manager review and approval. Exit interview conducted with Director, Jamie Newton. A NOTICE OF SITE VISIT WAS GIVEN AND MUST REMAIN POSTED FOR 30 DAYS.
